Welcome to Hellifield Chapel

Hellifield Methodist Chapel was built as a mission church to the families and men who built the railway in 1893, including the well known Settle to Carlisle Line.  A strong branch of the Band of Hope operated out of the chapel and was instrumental in bringing spritiual well-being to the community.

Recently the village of Hellifield has expanded, with a large number of new houses built on the redundant auction mart site.  There is also a proposed expansion of the village envelope towards the nearby village of Long Preston.  Although the chapel has seen a decline in recent years, the members are keen to reach out to the many new people moving into this area.   They are therefore planning to convert parts of their premises for community use.  It is hoped that this will include

  • A Youth Cafe, to be run in partnership with Hellifield Youth Committee, providing a venue for young people to meet and share news, and to be able to 'drop in' and interact in a relaxing, safe and non-threatening space.  There will be access to IT facilities and non-alcoholic refreshments as well as some life skills i.e. cooking, budgeting and basic business skills (running the cafe at a profit), and the opportunity to look at aspects of personal development, including a variety of spiritualities.

  • Cafe Church, providing an outreach into the wider community in the form of a cafe style meeting, where members and enquirers can meet and chat over refreshments.  Worship activities will be more informal, introducing the Christian message in a less structured way, and will include singing and spiritual input in the form of a Bible study or epilogue.  It is anticipated that this will take place mid-week, as an addition to the usual Sunday meeting.

  • Silver Surfers - an initiative that will provide IT training and internet access to the elderly.

  • Wellspring - providing opportunities for disadvantaged groups to gain access to advice and help on a range of issues, including assistance with job-seeking through access to IT facilities.  A 'listening post' type of service will also be available to help with more personal issues, as well as opportunities for craft activities and personal development.
