Welcome to Hellifield Chapel and Wesley Centre

Hellifield Methodist Chapel was built as a mission church to the families and men who built the railway in 1893, including the well known Settle to Carlisle Line.  A strong branch of the Band of Hope operated out of the chapel and was instrumental in bringing spritiual well-being to the community.

Recently the village of Hellifield has expanded, with a large number of new houses built on the redundant auction mart site.   There is also a proposed expansion of the village envelope towards the nearby village of Long Preston.  Although the chapel has seen a decline in recent years, the members are keen to reach out to the many new people moving into the area.   They have converted parts of their premises for community use.

Sunday worship: 2.00 p.m.

Weekday church activities:

Wednesday  7.30 p.m.  Guild (2nd Wed. of the month during Winter months)

Community activities include

  • A Youth Cafe, run in partnership with Hellifield Youth Committee and North Yorkshire Youth service.  It provides a venue for young people to meet and share news, and to be able to 'drop in' and interact in a relaxing, safe and non-threatening space.  There is access to IT facilities and non-alcoholic refreshments.   There are opportunities to work at some life skills i.e. cooking, budgeting and basic business skills (running the cafe at a profit), and also the opportunity to look at aspects of personal development, including a variety of spiritualities.

  • Silver Surfers - an initiative that provides IT training and internet access to the elderly.

  • Internet access for children and adults, in the form of a drop in, which takes place on a Thursday afternoon after school.

Other initiatives may include

  • Wellspring - providing opportunities for disadvantaged groups to gain access to advice and help on a range of issues, including assistance with job-seeking through access to IT facilities.

  • A 'listening post' type of service, which would be available to help with more personal issues, as well as providing opportunities for craft activities and personal development.

The room will be available for letting to groups; this complements the provision already available in the village in the form of The Institute.   Close working relationships between the two organisations already exist.
