Burton-in-Lonsdale, on the River Greta (a tributary of the Lune), lies midway between High Bentham and Ingleton in the northern section of the Settle Circuit.  In earlier times it was noted for its potteries and became known as 'Black Burton' due to the abundance of smoke from the kilns.  There are about 600 residents and, as well as the Methodist Chapel, there is a Parish Church (All Saints'), a Church of England Primary School, a pub and a shop/Post Office.  The shop is owned by the local community.

The Methodist chapel was built in 1871, and is in the centre of the village.  It now has 26 members, with a small number of children attending the morning service.

Relations with All Saints' are strong, with shared services at Harvest and Christmas, and regular joint Bible Studies.

There is a weekly term time Children's Club, run with the help of the Circuit Children's Worker, and an annual summer Holiday Club, held at the school in conjunction with All Saints'.

A weekly Friday Coffee Morning on the chapel premises provides fellowship for all (and is staffed by both churchgoers and non-churchgoers).  Each January the chapel hosts a party for all the over 60s in the village.
